In May Tower Hamlets will elect councillors as well as an Executive Mayor. The job of your councillors is to hold whoever is Mayor to account and represent Island Gardens at the Town Hall. Councillors are also expected to approve the Mayor's budget, appoint senior officers and consider and approve planning and licensing applications.

We believe that it is vital that the Mayor be accountable to the public. It is the duty of councillors to call for and uphold that scrutiny, not to act as cheerleaders for the Mayor. The current Government is concerned about the way that decisions are made and conducted in Tower Hamlets. It is essential that there are councillors who will hold the Mayor and his administration to account and to represent residents in doing this. Tower Hamlets council should be more open to scrutiny and co-operation without the mayor exercising so much power.

Peter Golds has served this area for twenty years and is one of the highest profile councillors in the Borough. Matthew Miles has campaigned locally for many years and is dedicated to opening up Tower Hamlets to ensure that it is run for the benefit of all residents.
